Willie remains solid, Size Matters disappoints

The Canadian contingent was off to a rough start last night at opening night at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

In the Bareback riding Dusty LaValley drew the Louisiana horse Size Matters. It was the horses first time to Vegas and was said to be a good draw, but as LaValley reported; "He didn't feel good. He had a couple of wiggles and was changing leads. I don't know how to explain it; he just didn't feel great. Whatever he was doing, he didn't fit my style." Read more

In the Saddle Bronc Dustin Flundra was also left looking forward to Friday's draw posting a 79 on opening nights Little Hawk.

In the Steer Wrestling, Cody Cassidy rode Willie for what was said to be "one last run" before retirement to clock a 4.6, just out of the money as the steer hung a leg resulting in a slow fall. Brother Curtis, who was leading the current world standings rode his gray horse Casper.

Casper had some opening night jitters having trouble settling in the box. An unfortunate combination of events (but with plenty of cowboy try) left Cassidy with a no time.

The Canadians then looked to Lindsay Sears and her mount Martha to bring home the gold, but the duo nudged first barrel on the way out to leave it on its side. Martha looked strong though and there is certain to be some round wins in her engine. Neither favorites Brittany Pozzi or Sherry Cervi managed to get in the money.
Past Canadian Champion Lisa Lockhart made the victory lap.

Thanks to YouTube user KaciEllenJ we are able to bring you the barrel racing! Lets hope we get this lucky every round! What a treat.
