Rodeo: Life on the Circuit - Premieres January 4th

Rodeo: Life on the Circuit premieres on History Television on January 4, 2011 at 8pm ET/PT.

Check out the Birds Of Feather Media Website for the cast and their descriptions HERE

Rodeo: Life on the Circuit takes us into the world of what ranks as one of the most dangerous sports in North America. Shrouded in the mystique of the 'Old West', a cast of professional cowboys and cowgirls take us on their own rodeo journey filled with colorful images of ritualistic lore and impassioned bravado unparalleled in modern spectator sports.

With unprecedented access to the inner sanctum of the Professional Rodeo circuit, Rodeo showcases the courage, strength, athletic skill, character and perseverance of these competitors. Rodeo explores the personalities, the relationships, the danger, the rivalry, and the inevitable stress of life on the road.

Not everyone survives.

As sixteen-time world champion rodeo cowboy Jim Shoulders, says "It's not whether you're gonna get hurt, it's when and how bad. It's why the Romans went to see the lions eat the Christians."

Put on a cowboy hat, jeans and boots, and take your chances. Where win or lose, everything you've worked for, everything you've dreamed about, comes down to a matter of seconds. Each one, it's own heart-pounding eternity.

Moody wins Average, Brazile wins Triple Crown

Going into round 10 Jill Moody and Sherry Cervi were battling it out for the $44K + 1st place average cheque. One of them was going to take second. Fortunately for Cervi, tipping third barrel only cost her the average title and the difference in money from first and second. Cervi still got second in the average having been so tough all week. This is the second time Moody has won 1st in the average, this time with a record fast time on 10 runs.
In the round Angie Meadors and Mulberry tied Brittany Pozzi and Duke for first. Duke was firing on all cylinders for that run, much like we had anticipated he would at the beginning of the week. This world championship is Sherry Cervi's third win. She has won each on a different horse. Troubles, Hawk and now Stingray.

You can watch all the round winning runs HERE And for each of the events too.

Trevor Brazile won his second triple crown of championships yesterday. Having secured the all around earlier in the week, it came down to the last round in both the tie down and team roping events. Clay Tyran waved it off in the Team Roping to hand Trevor his first Team Roping World Championship. Brazile earned over $500,000 in 2010, $$211,509.40 of it at the NFR to win the Top Gun award which included a new Dodge Truck and goodies to fill it.

Two-time Triple Crown winner Trevor Brazile and his family work the red carpet at the PRCA 10th Night After-Party, Dec. 11 at the Mirage Hotel & Casino. Brazile’s wife, Shada, daughter, Stella Bell and son, Treston accompanied him to the party for 2010 ProRodeo world champions and their families.

2010 PRCA World Champions
The 2010 ProRodeo World Champions gathered together on a stage at The Mirage Hotel during The Official Wrangler NFR World Champion Awards Show and 10th Night After-Party, Dec. 11 in Las Vegas. From left to right: Cody Wright (saddle bronc riding), J.W. Harris (bull riding), Sherry Cervi (WPRA barrel racing), Trevor Brazile (all-around, tie-down roping and team roping), Patrick Smith (team roping, heeling), Dean Gorsuch (steer wrestling) and Bobby Mote (bareback riding). All the 2010 champions have previously won a gold buckle.

In Canadian News, Willy Cassidy received a standing ovation as Curtis Cassidy tipped his hat to the horse that has done so much for the Cassidy family. Willy will be retired now after this NFR. He went out with a bang helping Curtis win the round in 3.7 seconds. Willy is 24 years old and has help cowboys win 5 world championships and of course numerous Canadian championships.

In the Bareback, Dusty LaValley finished out of the money, but held 4th position in the average finishing 10th in the world with $135,467.39 in season earnings. Dustin Flundra wasn't able to mark a score in the 10th round. Finishing 16th with $58,353.20 won. Lindsay Sears spared Martha in the last round and ran Moe. He had a nice run, but out of the money. Cody Cassidy finished the year with $155,566.97 in earnings, Curtis with $166,775.34 only $20,000ish behind world champion Dean Gorsuch.

Cervi clinches World Championship

Two world championships were secured mathematically last night during round 9. JW Harris won the bull riding and Sherry Cervi the barrel racing. It won't be just the world championship buckle JW is packing home with him, he will also have to find room for his first born. His wife gave birth to their baby just a few days after they arrived in Vegas. She will be making her first rodeo appearance tonight and will watch her Daddy be crowded the world champion. This is Harris's third straight championship. The legendary Don Gay was the last bull rider to do this.

In barrel racing Sherry Cervi and Stingray placed fourth in the round securing the world championship. Angie Meadors and the gray mare Mulberry won the round with an impressive 13.59. Meadors stated in interviews it was a coin toss to decide which horse she was going to ride. Both horses have been running strong all week, but knocked barrels put a stop on the would have paychecks.

In the steer wrestling, Curtis Cassidy got on soon to be retired Willy to split the first and second place paychecks. Cassidy remains second in the PRCA World Standings, but is 13th in the average standings. He has now placed in four rounds, but also has three no-times. Luke Branquino had a no time, putting him out of the average and opening the door for others to take the world championship. Cody Cassidy split 4/5 and is now 3rd in the average. Dogger Dean Gorush is in the drivers seat going into round 10.

Calculators will be in use quite a bit during Round 10, including in the team roping. PRCA World Standings leaders Clay Tryan and Travis Graves won Round 9 in 4.2 seconds to hold onto their top spots, but the team of Brazile and Smith were second in the round in 4.3 seconds and remained second in the Wrangler NFR average standings. Tryan and Graves lead Brazile and Smith by roughly $13,000 apiece in the world standings, but are fifth in the average. The difference between fifth and second in the average payout is roughly $21,000, so Tryan and Graves will need some shifting to go on in Round 10 to claim the gold buckles.

In the saddle bronc Dusty LaValley placed 4th again to hold his 4th place average. Dustin Flundra failed to mark a score. Lindsay Sears and Martha finished out of the money. Martha slipped on her hind end going into her second barrel and Sears not worried about an average cheque held up on the way home.

Without further rambling, here is what you are looking for ;)

3 go round buckles and an arena record for Cervi

Sherry Cervi beat the current arena record at the Thomas and Mack in round 8. It was also her 3rd go round win. Cervi and her 8 year old mare MP Meter My Hay "Stingray" toppled the past NFR best of 13.52 seconds set by Brandie Halls and I Am Not Te (“Slim”) in 2006

“Warming her up, I knew it was either going to be really good or really bad,” Cervi said of the record-breaking run with Stingray. “She was feeling good, and I knew that she was going to run hard. I just try to make the same run that I do every night. Obviously, it was just a little bit faster.”

Here are the runs from round 8:

I'm not sure if you can watch this if you aren't on facebook, but here is a great video interview with Sherry including another look at the record breaking run. Click Here There are interviews from every round win on there from each event too.

Cervi wins her second round

Round 7 Barrel Racing:

Sherry Cervi won her second round last night on her 8 year old mare Stingray. Cervi's $238,602 in earnings this season is $84,968 shy of Sears'' single-season earnings record from 2008 with three rounds and the average payout remaining. Sherry currently sits 3rd in the average, just .15 behind leader Jill Moody (Lisa Lockhart 2nd).

Lindsay Sears was second place last night with Lisa and Louie 3rd.

Check out this really cool video that was done by Classic Equine comparing Stingray and Sherry's last World Champion horse Hawk. Hawk is out of a 3/4 sister to Stingray. It amazes me the similarity in their style, but also how consistent Sherry is as a rider (10 years apart!)

In the steer wrestling Cody Cassidy placed 3rd and sits 3rd in average. Curtis Cassidy was just out of the money with a 4.8.
Dustin Flundra ended the round with a no score, but Dusy LaValley placed 4th with an 83.5 and moved into 4th in the average.

An interesting tidbit is that there are nine relatives of Grated Coconut to be at the Finals.

Here is the list of relatives and their ties to Calgary Stampede's Grated Coconut competing at the 2010 Wrangler NFR

Bareback riding
Coconut Roll – mother
Kauai Coconut – sister of Grated Coconut and daughter of Coconut Roll
Mad Money – daughter
Nightmare Rocket – son

Saddle bronc riding
Gross Beetle – half-sister
Gallant Warrior – half-brother
Knife Money – half-sister
Majestic Rocket – son (stud)
Mata Fact – daughter

Along with the nine relatives of Grated Coconut, Calgary Stampede had six other horses selected to the Wrangler NFR and a bull, Speed Dial.

Brenda Mays wins her first Go Round Buckle

Brenda Mays and Jethro won the round and with Sherry Cervi's third place finish she became the first barrel racer to surpass 2 million dollars in career rodeo earnings. Now with $221,090 in season earnings, Cervi is within striking distance of two-time World Champion Brittany Pozzi's single-season earnings record of $279,435 set a year ago. Defending world champion Brittany Pozzi won her first cheque of this NFR aboard Cozmo despite overshooting first a hair. She clocked faster in her first run than Duke as so far.

You can watch the round winners for each event here at rodeo up.

Curtis Cassidy still leads the world standings but will need to win several rounds now to keep it since he is right out of the average. Brother Cody is currently 4th in the average.

Dustin Flundra and Dusty LaValley are struggling to light up the boards. Lavalley has placed 6th 2x and sits 7th in the average. In the Saddle Bronc, Dustin Flundra hasn't picked up a cheque, but sits 5th in the average. Lindsay Sears is 9th in the average now having tipped another barrel in round 6 with a time that would have split 3rd.

Willie remains solid, Size Matters disappoints

The Canadian contingent was off to a rough start last night at opening night at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

In the Bareback riding Dusty LaValley drew the Louisiana horse Size Matters. It was the horses first time to Vegas and was said to be a good draw, but as LaValley reported; "He didn't feel good. He had a couple of wiggles and was changing leads. I don't know how to explain it; he just didn't feel great. Whatever he was doing, he didn't fit my style." Read more

In the Saddle Bronc Dustin Flundra was also left looking forward to Friday's draw posting a 79 on opening nights Little Hawk.

In the Steer Wrestling, Cody Cassidy rode Willie for what was said to be "one last run" before retirement to clock a 4.6, just out of the money as the steer hung a leg resulting in a slow fall. Brother Curtis, who was leading the current world standings rode his gray horse Casper.

Casper had some opening night jitters having trouble settling in the box. An unfortunate combination of events (but with plenty of cowboy try) left Cassidy with a no time.

The Canadians then looked to Lindsay Sears and her mount Martha to bring home the gold, but the duo nudged first barrel on the way out to leave it on its side. Martha looked strong though and there is certain to be some round wins in her engine. Neither favorites Brittany Pozzi or Sherry Cervi managed to get in the money.
Past Canadian Champion Lisa Lockhart made the victory lap.

Thanks to YouTube user KaciEllenJ we are able to bring you the barrel racing! Lets hope we get this lucky every round! What a treat.

First Down Dash Dies at Age 26

Press release courtesy of AQHA
American Quarter Horse racing’s most prolific stallion, First Down Dash, died on Thanksgiving Day at Vessels Stallion Farm in Bonsall, California. He was 26.

“He laid down and went to sleep peacefully. He was missing Scoop and his sunflower seeds,” said Bonnie Vessels, referring to her late husband, Frank “Scoop” Vessels.

Dr. Ed Allred, the sport’s all-time leading breeder, released the following statement: “First Down Dash is unquestionably the greatest stallion of all time. No horse has had the influence of the great First Down Dash. He was an amazing horse. He was a sire of sires. What an incredible and great career...he was in one word ‘amazing.’”

Bred by A.F. Stanley Jr. and B.F. Phillips Jr. out of the Gallant Jet mare First Prize Rose, First Down Dash continued the legacy at stud that started with his own sire, Dash For Cash. First Down Dash went on to surpass many of the all-time records set by Dash For Cash.

From 20 crops to race, First Down Dash has sired 1,163 winners, which includes 224 stakes winners. His progeny earnings stand at more than $73.7 million, easily the highest total of all-time. Among his offspring are 35 champions, including Down With Debt, Dashing Folly, Ocean Runaway, Corona Cash, Corona Kool, Wave Carver, FDD Dynasty, A Ransom, A Classic Dash, Dash Thru Traffic and Royal Quick Dash.

First Down Dash is the sire of a record six All American Futurity (G1) winners--Royal Quick Dash, Dash Thru Traffic, A Classic Dash, Corona Cash, Falling In Loveagain and No Secrets Here--and a record six Champion of Champions (G1) winners--Wave Carver, Ocean Runaway, Cash For Kas, The Down Side, A Ransom and Dashing Folly. In addition to being a top sire of sires, First Down Dash is also a perennial leading broodmare sire.

On the racetrack, First Down Dash won 13 of 15 career starts and earned $857,256. As a 2-year-old, he won the Grade 1 Kindergarten and Dash For Cash futurities. Then as a 3-year-old in 1987, he had a near-perfect campaign with six stakes victories, including the Grade 1 Los Alamitos and Dash For Cash derbies and the Champion of Champions. He was named that year’s AQHA world champion in addition to champion 3-year-old and champion 3-year-old colt.

Rodeo life is more than an 8 second ride

Rodeo life is more than an 8 second ride
Released by the Calgary Stampede July 14, 2010
The Calgary Stampede Rodeo 2010 Pool B

The rodeo arena usually has a clown or two in the infield but they aren’t the only ones in the arena doing the juggling. Life as a professional rodeo contestant rarely is a solo job or ambition. Many cowboys and cowgirls try to balance time on the road with another career, a family, harvest schedules, calving schedules and time off due to injury repair. It’s not an easy life for everyone involved but would they change it? If they willingly strap themselves to a bucking animal – the answer is obvious – participating at the Calgary Stampede Rodeo is the cowboy dream.

Kyle Thomson, of Black Diamond, Alberta, has a championship buckle for every month of the year. Thomson has won championships from Novice Saddle Bronc at the Calgary Stampede in 1998 to the Canadian All-Around AND High Point Champion of 2009. Not bad for a guy splitting his time between ranching, carpentry and a career fit for a cowboy – stuntman! Thomson has five major pictures listed to his credit including: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and The Assassination of Jesse James. Do you suppose he taught Brad Pitt how to stay on for more than eight seconds? Thomson competes in both saddle bronc and steer wrestling but at this go-round he is in the hunt for the saddle bronc buckle.

Cody Wright of Milford, Utah, is one busy Saddle Bronc rider! He has been a pro rodeo rider since 1998, won the Calgary Stampede Saddle Bronc Championship twice, is a seven time qualifier in the National Final Rodeo and accumulated over $1.2 million in career earnings. How he found time to do that while raising five kids probably is a trick handed down from his parents. Wright has 12 siblings and most of the seven boys are bronc riders too.

Bareback Rider, Matt Lait, moved from Seven Persons, in southern Alberta, to centrally located Balzac, last year and says the time not wasted on the road and in hotels is a significant improvement on his take home pay. This five-time qualifier at the Canadian Finals Rodeo however, might be in for a tough ride at the Stampede. In May, a bucking horse fell over and rolled on the cowboy, breaking his wrist and he has been nursing it since. “The Calgary Stampede Rodeo is one I don’t want to miss. One ride worth $100,000 is worth waiting for,” says Lait. During the offseason, Lait is owner/operator of Rodeo Drive Limousine. Now that would be a comfy ride to a rodeo!

Ouch! Speaking of breaking things, watch for the local superstar Bareback Rider, Davey Shields Jr., of DeWinton, Alberta. Exactly a year ago, the three-time Canadian Champion and three-time Calgary Stampede Champion broke his leg when a bucking horse fell on him. Shields is Canada’s only bareback rider to break the million dollar mark in earnings and is known for his perfect precision when working the bronc. That’s why he has qualified for the CFR 13 times...so far. He is far from finishing his career.

If you want to meet an ambitious cowboy, find Bareback Rider, Justin McDaniel of Porum, Oklahoma, heading for the chutes. McDaniel joined the pro rodeo circuit in 2005 and promptly won the Rookie of the Year Award. 2008 saw McDaniel win the Bareback World Championship, as well as the National Rodeo Finals Aggregate (most points). Last year, he won 10 rodeos and has already amassed career earnings over $600,000. McDaniel says his goal is to win the All-Around gold buckle like his rodeo hero, Ty Murray. It might be tricky keeping up his sprinters pace; the cowboy had back surgery in February to repair two herniated discs. Winning the championship this week will sure help land that golden buckle.

Practise makes perfect and Bull Rider, Douglas Duncan, of Alvin, Texas, knows it. He keeps five bulls on his ranch to work on his techniques. This Rookie of the Year Champion of 2008, and two-time National Finals Rodeo qualifier is determined to be the best in the sport. “I have a motto that goes through my head all the time – winners never quit and quitters never win,” says Duncan.

July 14 will be J.W. Harris’ birthday and what better present would there be than taking home a Calgary Stampede Championship. The bull rider only started his professional career in 2005 and has already accumulated close to $800,000 in career earnings. When Don Gay, the eight-time world champion bull rider saw Harris for the first time a few years back he said, “If he keeps riding like he did tonight, he’s going to have a good future.” Gay is right: so far Harris qualified for the NFR four times, and won the World Championship in 2008 and 2009. Interestingly, he won the 2009 title at the NFR in Las Vegas last November without earning any money at the event due to broking a hand in the second round. The world champion is decided by money earned and since Harris won 21 events in 2009 prior to the NFR he was well in the lead. As Harris says “I gave myself a cushion in case something did happen.” Harris’ ambition is to beat Don Gay’s record. When he is not on the road, Harris raises – you guessed it – bucking bulls.

Talk about finding balance, ask Ladies Barrel Racer, Deb Renger, of Okotoks, Alberta, how barrel racers balance the accounting books. “Travel costs eat up a lot of your earnings in barrel racing. A good barrel horse is $60 - $70,000 and most of us don’t have just one,” says Renger. But the expense doesn’t seem to be slowing her down; Renger has qualified for the CFR 18-times and the NFR five times. She won the 2004 Calgary Stampede Barrel Racing Championship and is just as determined to do it again this week.

Who says you get too old to have a new career? Watch for Ladies Barrel Racer, Mary Burger, of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma - she will try to steal our hearts. This lady is in her early 60’s and only started her pro career in 1985. Since then she has accumulated over half a million dollars in earnings. Burger won the Ladies Barrel Racing World Championship in 2006.

There might be family rivalry in the Ladies Barrel Racing. PJ Burger, also of Pauls Valley Oklahoma, is entered in the Calgary Stampede. She will be competing against her mother-in-law Mary Burger.

Expect the crowds to be on their feet when two-time and current World Champion AND three-time Canadian Champion Steer Wrestler, Lee Graves, bursts into the infield. Graves is a Calgary boy and the city is proud of him. Over the course of his career, the steer-wrestler has been to the CFR 11 times and 10 times to the NFR earning close to $1.5 million. But this year has been a little slow due to tearing a bicep tendon in his left arm in March. He says some serious physio and training in the gym has him ready as he told the Calgary Herald, “I will not embarrass myself – or embarrass Calgary.” Graves was Calgary’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2005, the same year he was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.

The competition in Tie-down Roping is going to be fast and furious. It is full of champions including Cody Ohl, of Hico, Texas, and Fred Whitfield, of Hockley, Texas. Between the two cowboys there is a total earnings of $5.4 million! Ohl, is the proud wearer of six world champion buckles and has been to the NFR 15 times, earning $2.6 million over his career. Interestingly, he raises bucking bulls on his ranch. Fred Whitfield, has been to the NFR a staggering 18 times and has eight World Champion buckles to choose from. Whitfield’s fireplace is already crowded with three bronze statue trophies from the Calgary Stampede but there is always room for more. Whitfield plans to toss his rope at 16 rodeos in July, from Oregon to Calgary and back to Wyoming.

So, what about those Rodeo Clowns? They may have clown in the title but they, along with the Bull Fighters, are the BFF’s of the infield. (BFF...best friend forever). Watch for the antics of eight-time World Champion Rodeo Clown, Flint Rasmussen, of Choteau, Montana. This crazy entertainer used to be a high school math teacher but falls back on his drama classes to get the crowd laughing. Who would even dare to think the man suffered a heart attack last year at the tender age of 41? Now, he’s not back in the saddle - but back in the barrel ready to keep the bull riders safe. With his pancake makeup cleaned off and back on the Montana range, Rasmussen and his wife Katie raise top-quality barrel-racing quarter horses.

Peek winner at Wrangler Timed Event Championships

(Guthrie, Okla., March 7) -- Adversity doesn’t stop Josh Peek of Pueblo, Colo. It never has.

Josh Peek Head Shot A year ago, Peek was leading the Wrangler Timed Event Championship at the Lazy E Arena with one run left. He took a 60-second time in the steer roping, the equivalent of a no-time in the competition, and dropped to a fourth place. On Sunday, he was again leading the average with one run remaining. This time, the 30-year-old tied his steer down in 18.4 seconds to clinch the title of 2010 Wrangler Timed Event Champion with a time of 315.2 seconds on 25 runs. He is the 11th man to win the title in the 26 years of the Championship.

In addition to winning $50,000 for the average, Peek, the two-time PRCA reserve all-around world champion, placed twice in the fast rounds and exited the Lazy E Arena with $58,000.

The money won at the non-PRCA sanctioned event does not count toward the PRCA World Standings. However, the paycheck will come in handy for Peek who has twins with his wife, Kori.

"I was more prepared this year," he said. "Before I got here, I believed I was going to win."

Peek’s drive and determination to overcome hard times goes back to his childhood. When Peek was 9 years old an old nail pierced the skin of his right foot. In a lot of cases, the story might have ended with tetanus shot. But Peek had stepped on this nail while in a pig pen. The child would undergo four surgeries, almost lose his foot and spend about a month in the hospital. In that span he would be given some antibiotics and that''s what he''s told induced epilepsy.

"Without adversity, you''ll never achieve success," he said Sunday. "There will always be road bumps and you''ll need the Lord and your family, but you also have to believe in yourself."
The Wrangler Timed Event Championship annually features 20 of the world''s top cowboys to battle the clock and tests their talents in a marathon of team roping - heading and heeling, tie-down roping, steer wrestling and steer roping over five rounds for a share of a $150,000 total purse.

Peek took the lead in the third round on the 14th run of the weekend. However, on the 19th run a fast running draw led to a 27.5 in the steer wrestling. He ended the fourth go in second place.

In the fifth round, Peek dropped to third. The team roping - heeling shuffled the deck as K.C. Jones of Burlington, Wyo., a four-time Wrangler Timed Event Champion, dropped to third. Trevor Brazile of Decatur, Texas, a six-time winner of the event, moved to the lead in the average and Peek went to second after 23 head.

In the steer wrestling, Brazile had a tough steer, getting a 60-second time. So, Peek tossed his draw in 4.1 seconds for 296.8 on 24 and the lead, with one run remaining. Jones was second. In the steer roping, Jones was 18-seconds for 343.0 on 25. Peek needed to be 46.1 for the win and was 18.4.

Jones finished second in the average for $25,000, while JoJo LeMond was third at 358.3 seconds for $15,000. Brazile claimed fourth with 364.9 for $10,000 and fifth was Chance Kelton of Mayer, Ariz., 367.6 for $7,500. Kelton also had the fastest round with 48 seconds in the second go for and additional $10,000.

Not long into Sunday''s action, fans witnessed something never before done at the event, as JoJo LeMond of Andrews, Texas, along with the assistance from 2008 World Champion Team Roping Heeler Randon Adams, shattered the team roping - heading record with a 4.5-second run. The previous record was 5.1 seconds by B.J. Campbell in 2002. LeMond also holds the competition’s team roping-heeling record with a 4.9-second effort with Matt Sherwood in 2009.

The Ironman of professional rodeo returned to the Lazy E Arena this past weekend in Guthrie, Okla., and for more than two and a half decades, this one-of-a-kind event has showcased world champions and a cast of ProRodeo’s elite cowboys.

The Wrangler Timed Event Championship will air as a special event on RFD-TV’s “Beyond Rodeo Show with Susie Dobbs” at 12:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. (CT) on April 29.
